Leaving the Netherlands What do you need to do when you leave the Netherlands? Here you find an overview of the things you need to do. Deregister at the munipality Just as it is a requirement to register with the municipality upon arrival, it is also necessary to deregister when leaving the Netherlands. Therefore before you leave, you must deregister with the municipality. Hand in your residence permit document (VVR) Your residence permit document is the property of the Dutch government. You must therefore return your residence document before you leave the Netherlands. Ensure you have a valid passport or other valid document To leave the Netherlands, you need a valid passport or another travel document. If your passport or other travel document is no longer valid, please contact the embassy or consulate of your country. Terminate your rental agreement Contact your housing agency or landlord regarding termination of your rental agreement. Please note that a legal notice term may be applicable. Cancel your Dutch basic health insurance If you worked and therefore arranged Dutch basic health insurance then you need to cancel your health insurance before leaving the Netherlands as your insurance policy does not have a fixed expiry date. Cancel your utility service Contact your gas, water, cable and internet service providers to terminate your utility services. Close your Dutch bank account and cancel any automated payments Please make sure that you have settled any outstanding balance and close your bank account.
