    Registration at a Dutch Municipality

How to register at a Dutch municipality

Dutch law requires all students, both EU and non-EU, who are staying longer than 4 months in the Netherlands to register at a Dutch Municipality. The municipality of Rotterdam will be present at the university to register international students who have found a room in Rotterdam. The dates will be sent via e-mail. Please note that registration can also be done independently by making an appointment at the municipality.

Required documents for municipality registration Rotterdam

    • The documents you will need will depend on your nationality and your living situation in Rotterdam. Information about the list of documents that you will need for the municipality registration will be provided by email before the start of your programme.

After students have registered with the municipality, they will receive a Citizen Service Number (Burgerservicenummer or BSN in Dutch). The Citizen Service Number (BSN) is a unique number which is required in order to be permitted to work, open a bank account, make use of a healthcare institution and any other affairs with Dutch government agencies.

Please note that if you will be living in another Dutch city you might also need a birth certificate for the registration. Please check the website of the municipality that you will be living in for a list of requirements.

Regardless of where you will be living in the Netherlands it is your responsibility to make sure that you are registered with a Dutch municipality.
