    Molecular Science and Engineering

    Exchange programme

    This programme offers you the opportunity to conduct research that focuses on the current sustainability issues in the chemical industry together with experienced scientists and lecturers. You will contribute ideas and help determine direction by participating in long-term, scaffolded research on the use of raw materials from sustainable sources, reducing harmful emissions, valorising waste, applying hydrogen technology, or the electrification of processes. In this programme you are able to give a meaningful and value-added contribution to the scientific output of our department through the development of innovative chemical engineering processes, with your own ideas and choices.

    Rotterdam is home to an extensive, cohesive and prominent industrial complex. The port is of great importance to the region and acts as a gateway to Europe. Considerable attention is given to the ecological impact and sustainability of chemical products and processes in view of the problems related to CO2 emissions, energy transition, nitrogen emissions, circular use of raw materials, and so on. In addition, the application of hydrogen technology and production from waste streams is one of the main focus areas to transform the current power supply of the Port area into a more sustainable one, in line with its future ambitions.

    Therefore this programme focuses on these developments in the chemical industry in relation to the research lines within the School of Chemical Engineering of the Rotterdam Mainport Institute. Examples of this are the valorisation of waste streams into valuable chemicals, battery systems from non-scarce materials, and the storage of sustainable hydrogen via formic acid.

    Students from various applied scientific disciplines can participate in these long-term research lines by making a valuable contribution to the scaffolded research in our research community.

    This programme is new and will be offered as of Fall 2023. Please note that we are currently still finalising the course information.

    What to expect

    About the programme

    In the programme Molecular Science and Engineering, work is done on innovative techniques that focus on the current sustainability of the (bio)chemical industry. You will learn to collaborate and work together with scientists and lecturers from the School of Chemical Engineering. Furthermore, you will gain knowledge within research projects related to the use of raw materials from sustainable sources, reduction of harmful emissions, valorisation of waste, application of hydrogen technology and electrification of processes. To solve these problems of tomorrow a practical approach is chosen in these research projects to develop solutions for sustainability.

    Furthermore, within this programme you are able to boost your professional competences in research (translating real problems into a research strategy and conducting the applied research), experimentation (performing experiments in order to demonstrate usability and applicability) and engineering design (developing and improving products or processes).

    Method

    All courses will be in “workshop style”. This means that instruction, collaboration, assignments etc. can be part of the courses.

    Type of assessment

    The assessment methods are varied for the four modules, namely, presentation, short paper and poster. These assessments correspond to the standard scientific communication of research results. The research reports you produce are the base for future teams picking up the research within the long- term research lines. If all four modules are completed with sufficient grades you will get a certificate for completing the 30 ECTS programme.

    • Hydrogen Engineering and Modeling (4 hours/week)
