    Maritime and Port Management

    Exchange programme

    The exchange programme Maritime and Port Management will introduce you to all operational and economical aspects of the shipping business and the sustainable development of ports. Supported by guest lectures and study trips you will learn about the development of the Port of Rotterdam you will make a comparison to other ports like Antwerp and Hamburg.

    The port of Rotterdam is an important node in the international network of trade and logistics. The exchange program Maritime and Port Management is the best preparation for students who want to work on Bachelor level in an international maritime and transport environment.

    1. Maritime Management

    During the first half of the semester the emphasis will be put on the Maritime Transport. You will learn all you need to know about the shipping business with the final goal that you will be able to run your own shipping company in all aspects. You will run this business in a competitive environment together with fellow students in an online Maritime Business game.

    2 . Port management

    The second period of the minor will be about the port and the connection to the hinterland. You will learn which criteria, like geographical position and the strategic choices made by the Port Authorities, determine the characteristics of a particular port. The differences between various major ports will be analyzed.

    What to expect

    About the programme

    During the programme we want you to experience the maritime business. This will be done by company visits, excursions to Ports like Hamburg and Antwerp and online business games. You will work in project groups with students from different countries, other Dutch Universities and also different programmes like Logistic Management, Maritime officer, and Logistics Engineering. What you share is you interest for ports and the maritime business.

    We will support this by sharing our knowledge about the industry during lectures which lead to individual exams.  

     

    Method

    In this programme you will join a class of approximately 50 students. Together with your classmates, you will attend the group lectures. Besides this, you will team up with a group of 3 or 4 other students. With this group you will work on (research) assignements, projects or serious games related to the Maritime business. The lecturers are available for questions and help, but it is up to you and your group to take the lead, to decide how you are going to apply the theory, and most of all: impress your (real) client!
