Cancel your Dutch basic health insurance

If you worked and therefore arranged Dutch basic health insurance then you need to cancel your health insurance before leaving the Netherlands as your insurance policy does not have a fixed expiry date.

If you received a healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag in Dutch) you also need to cancel the allowance before leaving the Netherlands. The Zorgverzekeringslijn advises you to send a written cancellation request to your health insurance company so that you can show proof of the cancellation request. The health insurance company should then send you a written confirmation and a document confirming the termination of the policy.

If you have any questions related to the Dutch basic health insurance or if you have received a letter from the CAK, you can contact the Zorgverzekeringslijn in English by calling:

    • 0800 64 64 644 from the Netherlands or
    • +31 88 900 6960 from abroad.
