Rotterdam - SMART Port, SMART City

Exchange programme

Are you looking for an inspiring international experience working with like-minded people from diverse technical disciplines? ‘SMART Port, SMART City’ will offer you the opportunity to do applied technical research on a real life case within the vibrant city of Rotterdam.

The Port of Rotterdam has the ambition to become ‘the smartest port in the world with boundless ambition’. In ‘the roadmap to the next economy’ the Rotterdam and The Hague metropolitan area is describing the SMART Digital Delta and the SMART Energy Delta as transitional paths to solving societal challenges and to harness new opportunities for economic development.

During this exchange programme you will be working on a real life case in the city of Rotterdam to contribute to the goal of making the city and the port of Rotterdam more SMART.

This year the applied research projects will be focusing on the following theme’s: 

  • SMART Public safety
  • SMART Energy
  • SMART Water

About the programme

During this programme you learn to:

  • Acquire knowledge on SMART Cities and a diverse range of  technical courses and apply that knowledge into a practical research project.
  • Be a critical and creative researcher. Come up with innovative solutions in collaboration with other disciplines and linked to your own field of expertise
  • Work together in a multi-perspective context (International, intercultural and multidisciplinary)

Research projects

Students can express their preference for the following research projects

  1. SMART Public safety
    Measuring the quality and quantity of water in the city of Rotterdam. In cooperation with our research centre for the ‘sustainable port city’ your will do research to traces of chemicals or other pollution in the water.

    This project could be of interest to students with a background in; Information Technology, Creative Media and Game Technology, Water management, Biomedical Laboratory Research and Chemistry.

  2.  SMART Energy
    Designing a Green energy island at sea. Making a design for the construction and maintenance of an island that can be placed at sea, which generates several sources of sustainable energy.

    This project could be of interest to students with a background in; Information Technology, Creative Media and Game Technology,  Water management, Civil Engineering, Electrical engineering.

  3.  SMART Water
    Sensor buoys for a SMART Port and City of Rotterdam         
    This project could be of interest to students with a background in; Information Technology, Creative Media and Game Technology, Water management, Civil Engineering, Electrical engineering, Biomedical Laboratory Research and Chemistry.
